Akismet is a free wordpress plugin that can save your hours a day if you run a blog. Even if you are just starting to make money blogging you probably recieve dozens of spam comments. These comments often contain links to sites that your regular readers can find offensive.

Akismet automatically catches most spam comments by matching them against a large database. This plugin is also easy to setup once you know how to find your api key.

Step 1
Login to your blog’s dashboard.

Akismet is packaged with the wordpress software, so you don’t have to download anything or use ftp.

Go to your plugin page.

Activate the Akismet plugin.

You will have to sign up for a free wordpress.com account. Sign up for a free account if you don’t already have one. The api key will be in the welcome email they send you. If you can’t find the e-mail check the profile page of your wordpress.com account.

Enter the api key back on the plugin page of your blog.

Under the comments tab there will be a link called Akismet Spam. Here you can rescue any comments that aren’t really spam.
